Beat beat beat Beatburns!
Born in the late 2009, Beatburns is the picture perfect example of collective souls. Five very different minds spontaneously come together to shape a solid form of sound. This not-to-be-stereotyped female-fronted band plunge into the depths of alternative/pop/punk music, collaborating influences from bands like Tsunami Bomb, Story of the Year and Flyleaf to create a platform of catchy melodies and dence music arrangements smashed together to fit in between the poetics of their lyrics. Fluctuating from soft to speedy songs without straying away from their own sound, this band is steadying itself through their own experiences. Sticking together as not only a band but family, Beatburns is paving their way with strong hope for a blast into the music scene. – taken from Beatburn’s page.
While Celene being away for awhile, Beatburns promised they’ll make a come back in 2012 with something new. Well, lets check out their first interview with PIZZZZSAHHHHH!
Pizzza: What type of band are you?
Beatburns (BB): We’re a band of five, playing pop punk / alternative. We like to experiment with heavy rock and the catchier generic sounds of a modern band. We would like to have triangles. And cowbells. And maracas.
Pizzza: Tell us the brief history of your band.
BB: Well, Aron walked up to Celine one day at a metalcore event at One Cafe. Celine was reviewing the gig for a magazine. Aron was just… there. And with a simple question, “Can you sing?”, it all began. Aron and Celine emailed recordings back and forth of bass lines and vocal melodies before finally jamming with Nik, Gas and Irsyad. Moe replaced Irsyad after a few more sessions. Ever since then we’ve played gigs, released an EP entitled “Faces” and creating new tunes actively.
Pizzza: What’s your influences?
BB: Hmmm… Though Celine’s digresses from Paramore being the influence for her melodies, and refers more to Flyleaf and Evanescence – Aron’s initial idea was influenced by Paramore. Moe adds the edgier guitar riffs with his fanatic Alter Bridge fetishes………. Nik comes up with creative ideas scooped from bands like Underoath and August Burns Red. Gas listens to Silverchair and Foo Fighters. Rojak, lah.
Pizzza: What are the band’s dreams and goals?
BB: Reading Festival….. Wait, that’s too ambitious. Okay, seriously, short-term wise, we guess a full-length will do. Long-term plans… big local events and going abroad. *Europe… Reading……… Yeah…..*
Pizzza: Who writes the songs, what are they about?
BB: Celine’s the lyric hogger. Compositions and arrangements are mainly Aron and Moe, but the whole band contributes to creating the final rendition. Celine’s adamant to stray from the topics of singing of love and heartbreak, and tend to touch upon darker, more personal emotions, such as confusion, self-esteem, hurt that isn’t caused by another person. Except for our only Malay track, ‘Bebas’, which is about escape from a bad relationship. We’d like to write a song about candy bars. And… marshmallows.
Pizzza: Where do you guys record you songs?
BB: For our EP, we recorded the drum tracks at Kamar Seni Studio in Cheras. The rest of it was recorded in Moe’s dingy, small, cat-infested room. By Moe himself. Budget mah….
Pizzza: How do you promote your band and shows?
BB: Honestly, we don’t really do much promotion outside of Facebook. Yes, we are Facebook freaks. Maybe a few flyers here and there. We usually just grab at moments as they pass us by…..
Pizzza: Describe your show, visual and musically
BB: We…. go with the flow? We usually put a lot of energy in our showmanship, regardless of who we’re playing for or the headcount of the
crowd. But in a way, the energy of a gig is like a ping-pong game. You bounce your energy out and they’ll bounce it back for it to get reaaaalllyy hyped up. So visually, it’s up to the crowd to evaluate our performance. Musically wise, we will try our best to… not suck. Especially sound-wise.
Pizzza: What do you think about downloading music online?
BB: Well… a lot of people download nowadays, regardless of whether it’s right or wrong. Um… guilty?
Pizzza: What’s your claim to fame?
BB: Fame is a bonus for us. Right now, the essential tool is to create music we enjoy and put effort in composing, and try to give the best of our
performances. And hope our sound can capture people’s attention… The rest will fall in place…
Pizzza: Tell us a story about a day in your life.
BB: The weekday scenario: Wake up, wash up, eat, work, eat, work, head home, vand eat some more. Ooh, let’s not forget the cigarettes. Weekend scenario? Wake up, wash up, eat, lepak, eat, lepak, head home and eat/lepak some more. Oh, and the cigarettes! Yes we are very unhealthy. Wait, we missed out the part where we jam or play shows. Er… slot that in somewhere.
Pizzza: What inspires you to do what you do?
BB: The Beatles. Uhh…. probably similar to many kids who watch their idols or go to shows and feel that energy being created and wanting to be the one creating it for the crowd. Just being a part of a music world, you know… like Bieber!
Pizzza: What local band do you inspire the most?
BB: We look up to bands like Love Me Butch, Plague of Happiness, Auburn, Stonebay, Hujan… Tilu (especially Gas, our drummer). We all look up to different bands in the scene, even the underrated ones like This Sunday and Asthalin (hahaha).
Pizzza: What’s new in the recording of your music?
BB: Our next step will be a full-length. We’re aiming for more vocal harmonies and guitar melodies. Definitely hope to achieve a fuller sound Maybe some strings, synth and piano…?
Pizzza: What are the biggest obstacles for bands?
BB: Inner conflicts. Everyone needs to agree and compromise on every next step made. Getting the band ready to face the phase of being in a band from ground zero.
Pizzza: What’s the best and worst thing about playing gig?
BB: The worst thing is probably when the sound system is quite hard to work with. It can also get quite disheartening when we play for little pay though the show is earning a pretty big profit. The best thing is we get to meet new people and earn new listeners. Also the experience is always a good thing.
Pizzza: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
BB: Welllllllll……. Celine’s about to head off to UK to further her studies, so the band will be playing as a four-piece. She’ll be coming back
now and then during her breaks and we’ll try getting gigs during her stay – this won’t be frequent so the more reason for you to check us out! And well, suddenly becoming a four-piece band, that should be worth a shot to come over and evaluate. Til’ then… come and join us for some lepak sessions. We don’t bite. Nomnomnom…
Thanks for interviewing ussssss!!
