Don’t give up on them, they’re coming back

A band that sounds differently from the other bands when they play in any show you go, a band that got what it takes to push to higher level, and a band that is so underrated by local organizers, this time we have Creamson as our featured artist.

Perfect sounds mixture of their influences Underoath, Envy, Alexisonfire, and Deftones you can hear in every of their songs, which give a great feelings into this hardcore/screamo band.

For our session this time, we got the only axeman from Creamson, Syam to talk about his band that has been around longer than most of the bands we can see on stage today.

This screamo hardcore quartet has released a split EP with Sforzando! and now have recorded around 5 songs.

They’ll be releasing their first album somewhere mid of this year, and will be recorded at Najme’s from Incarnation studio, Subhuman Production Studio in Bukit Antarabangsa.

We hope for the best of them, and here’s the Q & A with Syam.

Hi syam, welcome to Pizzza Magazine.
Hello!

My first question, why do you quit singing from Creamson?
The only time when I was really singing full time was when we were still playing covers back in school. So, when we started writing and recording our own songs it seemed like our songs are better off with a person who can growl. Obviously I can’t growl so we asked Luq to help out with the vocals.

Creamson has been around for like 7 years now, you guys have a pretty-bad ass songs that i am listening now.
You guys are so underrated by the local scene that we can’t see you on any show bills anymore.
What’s the hold up?
Well I guess we’ve never really had that much of exposure in the first place but I think we’ve had our fair share of gigs, especially back in 2007 and 2008 and during that we also had the privilege to open for Horse The Band and Killing Me Inside and also Rockonrave, which was pretty much a disaster of an event. 2009 was a pretty busy year for us as most of us were going through final year projects, and later started working. So 2009 was a pretty slow year for us but hopefully 2010 we’ll start getting active again.
I also prefer to play smaller scale gigs and loved it when we were playing at places like Skizo, Rainhouse Studio in Taiping and most recently Equal Studio, Kajang.
As of now, we’re hoping to record an album soon and when that’s done hopefully by middle of this year, we’re hoping to be active playing shows again.

Is it because you guys are not the “scene” people?
Haha no its not because we’re not the “scene” people. Just our luck and lack of exposure I guess?

Tell me more about your band, like influences, music direction and stuffs?
We started off playing covers from bands like Butterfingers, Rival Schools, Incubus and even Korn! So there’s already a diversity of genres. But of course that was during school years. As we do on we started to listen to more types of music such as hardcore and post rock. Now, our music is pretty much influenced by bands like Envy and Underoath, so there’s a mixture between heavy and post-rock-ish elements.

Do you think that local scene really understand what you guys are playing?
Yeah I think so, but sometimes its difficult to categorize ourselves, meaning if we’re playing at hardcore gig, we’ll be the mellowest band there, and when we’re at an indie gig we’ll be the noisiest band. But to answer your question, I think people can still enjoy what we’re playing and its always good to have different kinds of bands playing compared to having all bands sounding similar to each other in one gig. It gets boring after a while.

Do any of you guys have a girlfriend?
Only Jibin (Shahfeeq) does. Damn.

Syam, I’d really want to see this band back on stage. Do you have any plans for that?
Of course! Like I said before, we’re just waiting for our album to be done and hopefully we’ll be back active playing shows. Of course in the meantime, if there are any offers to play, we’ll be there if we can!

Shahfeeq your drummer is currently busy with his alter-ego band, Hello,is this the band?.
What do you think about him playing in that band?
He’s really enjoying playing in that band. We don’t have a problem with him playing with Hello as long as he can manage his time and commitment well. So there’s no problem there. Plus, Hello is becoming more and more recognized and its always good to see friends do well. Hopefully we’ll be there too someday.

Creamson’s guitar riffs are very sexy and nice. Where on earth do you find those?
Sexy and nice? Haha I’ve never known that the riffs are sexy and nice, but Thanks! I guess it comes from the influence of bands that I’ve been listening to.They’re mostly just ideas that come about when we’re jamming, since most of our songs are conceived during jamming sessions with no prior planning. Sometimes I’d have an idea of something, just a rough idea, and just bring it out during jamming and see where it goes from there. So from that rough idea, we would combine our creativity and it usually ends up being a new song! That’s how songs like A Classic Ending and The March of Glory came about.

Can you like tell us what are you using in your rig?
Well right now I’m using a Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner, EHX Metal Muff for distortion, Line 6 DL-4 Delay and a Behringer DR400 Digital Reverb/ Delay. So the order is:
Guitar > Boss TU-2 Tuner > EHX Metal Muff > Line 6 DL-4 Delay > Behringer DR400 > Amp
It’s a pretty simple setup, but I’m happy with it and how it sounds.

What’s your favorite local bands?
There’s a lot! Among them are Sevencollar T-Shirt, Love Me Butch, Damn Dirty Apes, i/ Am / Rain, Deepset and of course Sforzando! I’m not only saying that because they’re friends of mine, but honestly I love their style of music and how honest they are doing it. I’ve experienced playing with them as a sessionist once and totally loved the experience!

You know many bands here, which band do you inspire the most in what they’re doing?
I personally love bands that produce songs that are honest and able to portray emotions with the use of their instruments and meaningful lyrics. Locally, perfect examples would be I / Am / Rain and Sforzando! I don’t like music that are pointless and talk about random things that aren’t relevant.

When is your next release?
Hopefully by middle of this year

Finish this sentence; Hang kata hang tera…....…Tapi tak tera pun. haha (salah tu Syam, sebenarnya – piiiirah)

What is your opinion on the current music scene here in Malaysia?
I think there should be more gigs with different kinds of bands. Hopefully as the year goes on, more of these gigs/fests will be organized and hopefully we can be part of it.
Sadly,as we’ve witnessed, here you can see people that only support bands which are already established without giving new bands a chance.”Big” events like Rockonrave is a good example.Though it’s kinda different in other states, for example, all the 3 times we’ve been in Taiping, they’ve never disappointed us and that’s why we wouldn’t mind playing there again whenever given the chance. The people there are friendly and their support is great!

Do you have any suggestion to make it better?
Yeah, organize more shows! And support each other

If we give you RM100k now, what would you do to help your band and the others?
If we have that kinda money, definitely go for recording at a very good studio to produce an album, buy equipments for the band and then maybe organize an album launch or a gig where we can play with our favorite bands

Many bands play for fame and money, what do you?
Not for me, I don’t really mind about payments when we play, especially if we’re playing around KL. I like to just perform and expose our music to people. Of course if we’re offered payment, we’ll accept but normally we don’t ask for it, unless maybe if we play somewhere far to cover for transportation costs and whatever.

Do you think Creamson need a manager to help you guys get big?
I’ve never really thought about it.  I think we can manage but of course work gets easier if there’s a manager to help out with stuffs like dealing with organizers etc.

Incarnation has won the Junksound Awards in Metal/Harcore category, and the only Malaysian band that won Junksound Awards.Plus they are from outside of KL; from Kedah. What do you think about them and this?
I think it’s great and they definitely deserve it. Their songs and the quality of their recording is very good and to be the only Malaysian band nominated amongst other bands from other countries is already a privilege. So it was great to see them win it!
I think Kedah has produced many talented musicians. Bands like Incarnation and The Bourjuis are perfect examples of bands from Kedah that can go far with their music.

Define your band in two and a half words.
Pretty damn co__

Lastly, what do you got that say to your fans out there.
Don’t give up on us, we’re coming back

These guys are pathetic. Just an ugly bunch of poseurs with guitars. Have you seen the vocalist? He’s like Facebook’s biggest camwhore and befriender. Malaysia’s underground scene is way better than this. Their music is mediocre. I’ve seen them live a couple of times and I have to say their live set do not do their recording justice.

I do support you, PIZZZA magazine and I understand your motives. But there is a thin line between undiscovered talent and rockstar wannabes. These guys are the latter.

This interview is a blatant misrepresentation of the KL scene. Dig deeper for bands guys!
