The Realiti & Fantasi of Dichi Michi

The hottest new export from Kajang since ‘Sate Kajang’, power pop punk band Dichi Michi, consist of 5 friends; guitarist and vocalist Firdaus (Robot) and Ariff, Acong on bass, Roy on drums and Azam, who adds that special something to their music by playing the synths.

Even though they have only been around for two years, they’ve been received well by indie lovers, and been playing non stop shows around Malaysia. Dichi Michi released their EP titled “Sounds of New Hope” late last year which has 4 tracks, Fine Without You, Lost in Final Year, Stop It! Here’s Our Treat and Realiti & Fantasi, the last of which has been aired on local radio station XFM regularly.

With music influences such as PeeWee Gaskins, The Academy Is, Fall Out Boy, The Get Up Kids, Motion City Soundtrack, Callahan, My American Heart, We The Kings, Four Year Strong, The All American Rejects, All Time Low, and Forever The Sickest Kids. We can understand where the band gets it’s playful sound and catchy tunes from.

Currently, working with Tunestone Studios on a full album. Dichi Michi will give themselves a well-earned rest for this coming Ramadhan and Hari Raya, and then will be to play at Northern Festival in Ipoh this October. But not before sharing with us some of their latest news..

Hey guys, how are you guys. Welcome to Pizzza Magazine..
Azam: Thanks, well, we are good..hehehe  khabar baik..hehehe

Good to hear that from you guys. So, how’s the band nowadays, what are you guys up to now?
Currently we just finished recording our new single “Takkan Pergi” that will be released around august 2010. Together with the single, we will also release a video clip and our limited edition “Dichi Michi Ice-cream” t-shirt.

You guys played a lot of school proms event, how’s that going with the  band?
Performing for school students is totally awesome! They’re dancing n jumping like crazy. Its just like ‘party at the end of the world!!’ (laughing)

Dichi Michi sounds very much like Pee Wee Gaskins  from Indonesia. And in one of your show, San San (PWG) also made an appearance there. Are you guys opening a franchise of PWG here?

San San is one of our friends from Indonesia. He came here in Malaysia for his ex-band  (Killing Me Inside) tour in Malaysia and at the same time Dichi Michi perform for Jasmine high prom and covering Pee Wee Gaskins songs. So we just invited him to be with us on stage for fun. Guess what, we are totally having fun and so the crowd. The show was a blast and thanks to San San for his appearance.

Urm, I think its normal for bands to create their music according to their surrounding influence including environment, emotion, politics and also influences the from music they listen to. Some bands put only international/americans bands as their influence. So why not we included some asian band on the list.

Yes, PWG is on the list of Dichi Michi influence in the early stage, but as days goes by, we finally found our own identity and style of our  music. Maybe its not really obvious in our first EP but it will  appear in our next release. Just wait for it….

Who is the lyricist, write the song, and produces your songs?

Robot: Usually we sit and write songs together. So each of band member will give some idea to create songs and the arrangement. The lyrics are usually written by me (Robot), Lau and Ajam. All of our songs produced by us and co-produced by Ijai from Prosound Studio (handsome guy).

I  heard you (Robot) involved in an accident before the show, tell us what
 happened?

Robot: Owh, the accident happen 4am in the  morning when we were on our way back home after the Killing Me Inside (IND) live in malaysia show. In my car there was me and the ex-tour manager of Killing Me Inside, Aca (Straight Answer). While I was driving in that clear highway (current speed 140km/hr), there’s a car “Mitchubitshi  Lancer” speeding and lost control and then hit highway barrier. The car spin over 3 to 4 times in front of us and stopped in the middle of the highway. I cant do anything then “BAM”. I hit the car. Luckily we fastened our seat belt. Front part of my car totally…..”hancur” and my steering wheel block my chest but i managed to get out. Aca managed to get out too. Thank God me and Aca were safe (laugh). Then half and hour later, the police and tow truck came to rescue.

Pop Punk has a huge market in the world, and even here. Not many pop punk bands made it to the level where we can see bands like ‘Bunkface’ are. Why do you think this thing happened?

I think any kind of music has a huge market in the world. Doesn’t matter what kind of music you play for sure there are some listeners who will love it as long as you create good music. Talking about why other band can make it or not, We can’t predict the future, so I think maybe they have not made it yet, maybe soon, right?

Do you think Dichi Michi will reach to that level?

Maybe, waddya think?? (laughs) we just work hard all the time to spread our music. So, we just do anything to become bigger n better everyday.

Tell us more about Dichi Michi that we never heard anywhere before.

(Laugh) Nothing much. We are so addicted to ‘coconut jelly’. This kind of jelly only widely sell  in the East Coast. So everytime we have show there, coconut jelly will be the first menu we will search for. Man! I don’t even realize  this kind of jelly exist!! It is so good to taste especially on our journey back to kl after the show.

Until today, how many shows Dichi Michi has performed? Seems like you guys never stop playing.

Urm start from early 2009, we performing almost every week from small gigs, bigger one and until big  scale event/concert. So, till now, im not really sure how many shows we’ve performed. (laughs)

So what are your plans for the future? Do you plan on touring somewhere soon?
Erm we plan to spread our music to all over the world.. sampai org gaji pn hafal lagu kitorang (laughs) just joking… We are planning for malaysian tour w/ other local bands but its still in planning stage
